Milk Production - page 2

This consists of almost exclusively UK produced ingredients, such as UK maize gluten and linseed, as well as wheat and barley grown on the farm.

The higher yielding ewes give birth to purebred Friesland lambs to produce flock replacements. Poorer performers mate with a Suffolk Ram.

For the first 7 months of her lactation she is milked twice a day, and for the final 4-6 weeks this is reduced to once a day. The best ewes will give a total lactation yield of 450+ litres reaching a peak daily yield of 4-5 litres. Sheep milk is high in solids (approximately 18%) hence is ideal for making high quality cheese.

When there is sustained grass growth from mid April onwards, and the weather becomes more settled, the flock is turned out to graze. In the late autumn, they are brought inside again to protect them from the onset of winter.
